CGW Goes to: Riverside Dickens Festival

dickensfestThe Riverside Dickens Festival is a weekend long celebration focusing on the life and times of Charles Dickens and will include 2 different fashion shows, theatrical performances, buskers, vendors, tea parties, activities for children, parades, Gatling gun and military demonstrations, and even parasol dueling! There will be visits with literary figures of the time: Dickens, Poe, Twain, and others, as well as Queen Victoria and various members of the royal family. Evening events include; Pickwick’s Pub night on Friday evening, Mr. Fezziwig’s Ball Saturday, and Evensong on Sunday. The website will tell you which events require a ticket.

Time:  We’ll decide on a time as the event approaches. Please send a note to Eileen or the facebook group to let us know what time you would prefer.

Cost: free (Some of the events, such as the ball, are ticketed only, but we will be meeting for the free portions.)

Tickets: Not required for the free events. If you wish to buy tickets to the special events, they are available at this link.

Address: Downtown Historic Riverside on Main Street between University Avenue and 10th St

Parking: Nearby parking in public lots.

Children: Children are welcome to attend. Several activities specifically for children including Oliver’s Alley which provides children with a fun and free Dickensian experience and is funded by a Community Arts Partnership grant from the Riverside Arts Council. All activities in Oliver’s Alley are free to those under 12.

Refreshments: Street vendors sell a variety of foods, there is also The Royal Victorian Tea Room & Music Hall and the Tavern where Bad Baby Babs is waiting to sever up a pint of ale and a song.

Costume Suggestions: Anything that would be appropriate for Victorian England, and can include street people, London Bobbies, steampunk, western gun slingers, military uniforms of the times, household servants, and of course middle and upper class ladies and gentlemen.
